Lib Dems secure a first step towards a more transparent Preston Council
Yesterday a notice of motion put forward by Liberal Democrat Councillor John Potter to open up Preston City Council was voted through by the full council.
The motion suggested a number of ways that would allow members of the public to become more engaged with the workings of the council, including the possibility of video webcasting of meetings, promoting the free use of publically owned photos and most importantly, finally allowing members of the public to speak in favour or against planning applications.
Cadley ward Councillor John Potter said, “This is fantastic news and hopefully will lead the way for other innovations in making the council more open and accountable.
“Preston residents deserve the right to have their say on planning decisions, just like they do on Licensing issues. Planning applications might affect them, their families and their neighbours for years and possibly decades to come – how can we deny them their voice? Preston is years behind some of its neighbouring councils that already allow the public to have their say on planning applications. This change is long overdue.”
The proposals in the motion will now go to a task and finish group to assess the viability, scope and detail on possible implementation.
