A Good Deal – A Green Deal

by neildarby on 25 October, 2012

If you need some home improvements to make your home cheaper and more environmentally friendly to run, then there is good news! The government has launched the ‘Green Deal’ initiative which will enable people to upgrade their home to be more energy efficient at zero net cost.

Whether it is a new boiler, insulation, double (or triple) glazing that your home needs, or even if you would like solar panels or a wind turbine, you can apply for a Green Deal Assessment where a professional will visit your home to see what you could benefit from. Repayments will be made from your electricity bill at a rate based upon the savings you will make in both gas and electricity bills from the increased efficiency of your home – so it will cost you no more than your current household expenditure, and in the long term will save you money. And if you move out, then the new owner takes over the payments.

Most energy suppliers (British Gas etc) are Green Deal providers, so it is worth speaking to them about getting started. Some companies may charge for assessments whilst others may not, so it is worth shopping around. If you rent your home, then both you and your landlord must agree to the improvements being made. WARNING: be careful of cowboys claiming to be part of the Green Deal – all providers must provide you with the full information and be registered with the Government. If you are unsure ask for them to call you back later and call 0207 090 1031 to confirm if they are the real deal.
