Local police encouraging use of shed alarms

Following a marked increase in 2011 of burglaries reported on sheds local police are asking local residents to be vigilant and to take all precautions to protect their belongings.

Between 01/01/11 to 05/09/11 there have been 123 recorded shed/garage burglaries on Lea (which includes Tulketh) which accounts for 45% of all recorded burglaries. In 53% of these burglaries a total of 220 pedal cycles have been stolen. The remaining 47% is accounted for largely by gardening equipment and tools. 60% of the time the offences are being committed overnight or over a period of days. Only in one of these 123 cases have we detained an offender at scene or nearby.

Commenting, Tulketh campaigner Neil Darby said: “While crime remains relatively low in our area, it is important that we continue to do all we can to reduce the risk of being affected.”

“Aside from keeping vigilant and following common sense rules on reducing your risk, shed alarms are a good way of shoring up protection of your belongings. They are proven to be effective with reports of alarms deterring would-be thieves here in the Lea policing area.”

“I would like to see our councillors put some money into a fund to help provide some shed alarms to residents in our area to assist our police in lowering crime in Tulketh and Preston.”
